Prophetic reliability

2022.01.19 15:53 ncsuandrew12 Prophetic reliability

I was just listening to the Alcair Dal scene and found it amusing how the whole "prophecies are unreliable because of time and translation" excuse Raginor used to make Moiraine not know who the Dragon is thoroughly discredited. Couladin is among the most immature and honorless characters. He's also not particularly bright. And what is his argument that he, rather than a wetlander, is the Car'a'carn? That the prophecy is old and had lost accuracy:

Couladin’s confidence never wavered; he sneered openly at Rand, the first time he had even looked at him. “How long since the Prophecy of Rhuidean was first spoken?” He still seemed to think he had to shout. “Who can say how much the words have changed? My mother was Far Dareis Mai before she gave up the spear. How much has the rest changed? Or been changed!"

2022.01.19 15:53 ThrowAway_Acc_1037 I (M31) am standing up in a wedding this summer, but I'm not sure I'll be with my girlfriend (F26) then. What should I do?

Background is that I've been with my GF since summer of 2017, and we moved in the fall of 2020 for her graduate program. Our relationship has been rocky since we've moved for the following reasons:

For those who want me to leave immediately, I made a promise to her that I wouldn't leave her in a stressful time due to her severe mental issues including depression, which is pretty much until she graduates in May. I accepted this situation, and I am going to be there for the rest of the semester. But once she graduates, and the stress of school is off, I might not be following her. What would make me follow her is if our relationship improved dramatically by the time she graduates, and this semester we put a plan together to focus on her mental health, and I think it's working so far. I still think our relationship doesn't have the best chance of surviving, but I don't want to write it off.
To finally reach what I'm trying to decide, I got the 'Save the Date' in the mail, but have been holding off on mentioning it as it is after she graduates and will likely be in a new city, and I don't know if I'll be there either. I know I need to mention it, as she knows about the wedding and that it'll be this summer. I also got off the phone with my parents recently, and realized I was discussing the wedding with them and she possibly overheard. I'm wondering how to approach the conversation. Any advice?

2022.01.19 15:53 NefariousnessCalm925 [PLAY] What to practice and how long to practice?

Hey everybody, looking to get some advice on practice times. If work a day job and squeeze in 1.5 hours to three hours of practice most day. Probably clocking 15-20 hours a week. My practice routine looks something along the lines of: Warm up( Chromatics), Warm up( Chord and chord voicing), Triad routine, Arpeggios (Currently Dom 7 and Maj7), New licks after that, usually end with about 30 minutes of improvisation. How many hours of practice do you all practice and how many should I be trying to squeeze in to make serious strides?

2022.01.19 15:53 Emotional-Range-4865 Dialing in Light Roasts

I don't really know if this is the right place for this, but I was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice for me.
I got a Flair Signature for Christmas and I've achieved fairly repeatable good results with some darker mid-grade Trader Joes coffees, and I wanted to try making lighter specialty coffee with my Flair. I chose Mass Appeal from a roastery near me because it was a lighter roast without many citrus notes. When using a similar grind size to my Trader Joes "light roast (Dark Oily Beans)," ≈20 clicks on my jx-pro I made, as expected, a very sour weak shot. My problem is that even when I dial it down to 18 clicks, my shot still tastes sour without much body, but it drips out leading to an extremely slow brew time: 2-3 minutes for a 1:1 recipe (I'm going for the recommended 1:1.85 recipe but I often lose my patience). I wonder am do I just have too high expectations for this coffee, do I need a lower dose (I currently stick to a 16g dose), or is there something else I'm not thinking of? I'd love to hear if anyone has any advice.

2022.01.19 15:53 Georgedathird Good shows can have flaws and are not immune to criticism, no matter how much they mean to you

First thing's first: I enjoyed the show. I even teared up once or twice. Across the board, I found the performances to be phenomenal. The directing was top-notch and Dan Romer's score elevated every frame. Simply put, it was a beautiful show about human connections, built up and broken, and how those connections inform who we are throughout our lives.
Now here comes the BUT. The TyleKirsten/Undersea story line just did not add up. Everything we learn about Kirsten through the first half of the show would inform us that she would not help Tyler. She's aggressively suspicious and protective of her group. She tried to murder Tyler when he was a creepy guy making vague threats. It makes no sense that she would then help him after those two kiddos blew themselves up. Now, sure, he said she needed his help to find and save the symphony, but why? There's no explanation there. Kirsten is arguably the smartest, most resourceful character on the show, are we to believe she couldn't eventually find the symphony without him? Is it just because of the comic book? Is the mention of the comic book suddenly more important than potentially protecting the lives of your troupe?
Then once they get to the airport, she not only continues to help him, but puts him in the god damn play. Why? Art therapy with his mother?
The show goes so far as to even have Tyler finally ask Kirsten why she's helping him (to which my wife and I screamed THANK YOU at the television), to which she responded "stabbing you didn't work" (to which my wife and I screamed FUCK YOU at the television). To me, that's poor, lazy writing. It felt like someone in the writers room started with the idea of "wouldn't it be cool if Tyler reconciles with his mother while playing Hamlet IN HAMLET?" and then they forced the rest of the plot to end there.
Furthermore, there's no real closure on the whole Tyler is a child murdering terrorist who called on the hundreds of children he's kidnapped over a ten year span to come blow up an airport. The plan goes into action when he blows up the tower. We see many kids descending on the airport at the end of episode 9. Then, Kirsten stops one girl. One. And the whole plan is called off? And instead we get this heroic, beautiful high overhead shot as Tyler heads off into the sunset with his flock of kidnapped kids, and we're supposed to feel, what, at the very least, okay with it? Cuz, now, he, what, has a mom? For such a major plot point, far too much happens off screen, without explanation, in service of a tone, a feeling.
Now, when I've brought these issues up both here on Reddit and with friends in person, the rebuttals range from "trauma causes people to make strange decisions," to "Tyler doesn't know better because he's damaged" (WE ALL FUCKING REMEMBER DAMAGE), to "you should read Hamlet," to "listen to the podcast with the show runner and hear how a bunch of stuff didn't make it into the show regarding the undersea."
None of that uses what's in the show to address the problem. The show is a piece of art. But no art is immune to critique, and a critique of what happens within the boundaries of the show can't be explained away by things that occur outside of those boundaries.
I find this happening more and more when talking about film and tv. People love or hate something, it's good or bad, and there's little in between (honestly, how often do you hear something described as "just fine" anymore?). I get a sense that more and more people stake their identities to the shows they like, and therefore take it personally if you make a reasonable critique against it. But art can be good and bad at once. Beauty can be flawed just as there can be beauty in flaws. Few works of art, if any, are perfect. And it's okay to admit that. But it's strange to get defensive, and sometimes outright hostile, when someone who begins the conversation with "I liked the show," brings up some issues.
I believe individuals can interpret certain things differently. Where I saw a beautiful, heroic, ride-into-the-sunset high and wide with Tyler, a friend saw it as a menacing, to show that he's still out there with quite a bit of power. I accept different interpretations of meaning when it comes to the overall message of a show or certain intentional ambiguities within it. But when hard plot points that propel a show forward, and character development that clearly paints a character in a certain way, suddenly fall away to meet an ending, I find that problematic.
Things can speak to you and still have flaws. Just because something makes you happy, doesn't mean it's perfect. And that's perfectly okay.
